HOME INSPECTION PREPARATION CHECK LIST
1-Make sure that all electrical panels and sub panels are clear for access. This includes the removal of any obstructions such as shelving or cabinets as well as any storage directly in front of the panel(s). 2-Make sure that hot water tanks are clear for access on all sides where possible. 3-Make sure that any furnaces are clear for access and inspection on all sides where possible. 4-Make sure that any electric hot water boilers are turned on prior to the day of the inspection. 5-Make sure that any crawlspace hatches are cleared for access where applicable. 6-Make sure that all breakables are removed from window areas and that all blinds/window coverings are raised/opened if possible. 7-If the attic access hatch is in a walk-in closet or other closet area where falling insulation may be an issue, make sure to remove all clothing or storage from the closet that would be affected, as well as any attached shelving in closets that may impede the inspector’s access. This would include making sure that access hatches are not screwed or painted shut. 8-Make sure that all sub-sink plumbing areas including laundry sinks are free of storage and contents.*We recommend a cardboard box for these items, and also recommend that they are not placed in other areas the inspector may have to access (Example: Bathtub/on top of crawlspace access hatch). 9-Insure that all vehicles are removed from garages and carports. 10-If the home is vacant, insure that the main water supply is on prior to the inspection. 11-If the home is vacant, make sure that the water heater has been turned on prior to the inspection (water supply and electrical breaker). 12-If the home is vacant or it is not the heating season, make sure that any gas, oil or propane fired appliances are on prior to the inspection (pilot lights) and that there is an ample fuel supply where applicable. Ex. Is there heating oil in the tank? 13-If the home is vacant make sure that the main electrical power has been turned on prior to the home inspection. 14-Make sure that “indoor only” pets or pets that are not friendly to strangers have been temporarily relocated prior to the inspection.
